PE & Sports Premium report 2023-24 (click here)
At St John’s, the staff and governors want to ensure that all children have access to high quality PE lessons and engaging physical activity opportunities, which will promote a life long love of sport. During lessons, children will be given the opportunity to learn and develop the physical and tactical skills needed for participation in sport. We also aim to equip our children with the knowledge and understanding of the importance of healthy living through our PE, PHSE and Science curriculums.
What is the Sport Premium Funding?
The Sports Premium funding is additional funding provided to schools to fund ‘additional and sustainable’ improvements to the provision of PE and Sport for primary aged pupils, and to encourage healthy and active lifestyles.
How much Sports Premium funding do we receive?
For the academic year, 2022-23, St John’s will receive £16,000 plus £10 per pupil.
How do we use the Sports Premium Funding?
We use the five key indicators suggested by the Government and Youth Sport Trust to guide our expenditure. These key indicators are:
- The engagement of all pupils in regular physical activity – Chief Medical Officer guidelines recommend that primary school children undertake at least 30 minutes of physical activity a day in school.
- The profile of PE and sport being raised across the school as a tool for whole school improvement.
- Increased confidence, knowledge and skills of all staff in teaching PE and sport.
- Broader experience of a range of sports and activities offered to all pupils.
- Increased participation in competitive sport.
We meet these key indicators by spending our Sports Premium funding in the following ways. These are both historic and current:
- Specialist coaches work with staff to up skill their delivery and ensure sustainable high quality PE lessons for all.
- Employment of a full time Sports Coach who runs after school clubs, supports in P.E. lessons, runs activities at break and lunchtimes for the children and works with small groups of children with a range of aims in mind e.g. increase activity, increase self-esteem
- Sports Leader training so children can run lunchtime clubs to help children achieve their 30 minutes of physical activity in school.
- Extra curricular sports clubs
- Developing the playground facilities and equipment
- Developing planning, sequence of lessons and assessment in PE lessons through the purchase of GetSet4PE
- Entry into competitive school sport competitions.
- Specialist visitors and taster days (e.g. Yoga, Tennis, Cricket, BMX) which promote Healthy, Active Lifestyles.
- Increase the number of children who leave Year 6 achieving the expected swimming standard of 25 metres by providing catch up swimming lessons.
Our PE Curriculum
All classes receive two PE lessons per week. We ensure that PE lessons cover a wide range of sports and physical activity including dance, football, hockey, lacrosse, handball, badminton, volleyball, multi-skills, rugby and many others. We aim to provide children with the opportunity to experience a wide range of sports so they develop a lifelong love of sport and physical activity. In turn, this will help to give them the necessary skills to lead healthy and active lifestyles.
The funding has already:
- Improved the standards and delivery of PE across the school ensuring current and future pupils have access to high quality PE lessons
- Improved teachers’ subject knowledge and confidence when teaching PE through coaching and a scheme which helps with planning and delivering high quality and progressive skill-based PE and sport lessons.
- Raised the profile of Sport and PE across the school ensuring children develop a life long love of sport and physical activity
- Increased interest in extra curricular sports clubs
- Employed Sports Coach
